Designer

Washington DC, USA — or — Madrid, Spain

Description

Høst Creative, a strategy and design consultancy based in Washington, DC, is looking for a full-time Junior and Senior Designers to help us develop interactive, branding, and occasional print collateral for our clients and partners. We work primarily with international organizations and the development sector, but are also exploring product development.

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Day-to-day, you’ll be creating design assets (wireframes, comps, and prototypes) but also art-directing team members, vendors, and partners across a variety of projects.
  • Høst team is small and mostly remote, but you’ll work continuously with partner organizations and clients in various sectors and (often) time zones.
  • Interactive systems (both web and native) are the bulk of the work we do, and you’ll spend a fair amount of your time solving problems around user experience, information architecture, and visual UI.
  • Manage workflows, set timelines, consult on budgets, and present work to clients and partners

You're good at...

  • You’re a versatile designer with experience in a variety of fields (ideally branding, publication design, advertising, or even motion graphics) but you especially love interactive design and its unique challenges.
  • We’re a small company where everyone wears several hats, and we have new and unfamiliar problems to solve on every project. You’re comfortable researching a new problem and presenting recommendations back to the team, and you can work independently with minimal direction.
  • You’re comfortable with (or at least willing to learn) basic HTML and CSS, such that you’re conscious of how your design will function and respond in-context. Even better: you can create prototypes and develop your ideas in the browser.
  • You’re able to think in terms of system and structure, not just surface. You can nerd out over your favorite typefaces and photo filters all day long, but you understand those things are just the tip of a much deeper iceberg. On every project you focus on delivering a system that is as usable, accessible, and simple as possible.
  • When a new problem or task is dropped in your lap, you’re able to ask good questions to get the direction you need, ensure that you’re solving the right problem (which is not always the same as the one you’ve been given), and that you’re able to verify assumptions and test hypotheses. To that end, you’re comfortable facilitating brainstorms, content exercises, etc. with clients and partners.

Bonus points

  • You’re comfortable with basic Javascript and front-end tooling.
  • You have some experience with Git version control and collaborative workflows.
  • You can write. Design is more than graphics: it has to get an idea across. Knowing how to write a good headline or give direction on copy style/tone makes you much more effective as a visual communicator.
  • You know your way around a camera, a paintbrush, or maybe even a welding torch. We spend a lot of our time working with pixels and code, but traditional craft informs everything we do there. And it’s a good reminder that the computer is never the solution – it’s just another tool.

Core values & success

  • We’re focused on creating simple, useful tools that have meaningful impact for our clients and community. You’ll be a crucial part of this mission: not only increasing our design capabilities, but also helping us develop our overall design vision and culture.
  • We see this position as a mixture of hands-on design work and art direction, with the focus initially on the former. But as you grow and get up to speed with our tools and process, we’ll find more and more opportunities for you to direct and work independently. Ultimately, we’d love to see you handle the entire design phase of a project from start to finish, managing the personnel and the client, with minimal oversight.
